News items are like buses - you wait for one and then three come along at once. In this instance it's the Universal Serial Bus, and it's being driven by Stuart Tyrrell.
STD have announced the immediate availability of external USB Zip drives suitable for use with the Simtec/STD USB card. Two models are on offer: Zip250 drives that can read/write 100MB and 250MB Zip discs, and Zip750 drives that use 250MB and 750MB discs. Prices range from £89 through £119, including VAT and carriage.
At present only DOS format discs are supported, although Stuart tells us that RISC OS formats are "something we would like to offer in the near future, and which would be available as a free upgrade." In the interim, Win95FS from Warm Silence Software would be of benefit, as it allows mixed case long filenames to be used instead of the standard 8+3 DOS naming system.

I had a standard 100MB USB Zip which worked with my IYONIX pc with no problems...

Thesea aren't the Zip 100s however; they're the later 250 and 750 versions. They probably need different drivers, and so aren't using what's already built in to the various RISC OS USB stacks.I'm sure Stu can correct me if I'm talking out of my arse ;) |
