News has reached us that the RISC OS Adjust ROM sets have started to arrive on the doormats of RISC OS users who have ordered them over the last few months.
Dave Briggs commented on the Select mailing list that "Copying files seems ro be a bit faster and not having the double boot, means that the desktop certainly comes up quicker."
RISC OS Adjust is the latest OS release as part of the RISC OS
Select scheme, and is available from RISC OS Ltd on a
sliding price scale depending of if you are part exchanging from older RISC OS ROMs, and how long you have been a member of the Select scheme.

I thought I was going to buy a ROM set, but then I realise that I'm back to square one again when the next softloadable update comes out. Is this right? Is there only a short-term boot time advantage until the next update comes out? |

Just make an expansion card with lots of flash ROM on it, 4MB should do. Then you can softload much quicker. However making it takes time. |

What if you have a machine with flash roms, RiscStation maybe? Can the computer reflash the rom? Will Adjust be sold is that format? |

What I understand is that it comes on FlashROM.
What I also understand is that the computer holding
the FlashROM must be equipped to allow the re-flashing
of the ROMs. The Iyonix pc allows this.
Perhaps the RiscStation too.Anyway, it seems sensible for RISCOSLtd to offer
the re-flasing of Adjust ROMs to provide a long-term
Select/Adjust ROM option. |

There's nothing short term about the boot up time being quicker, it's just the upgrade and since I've had my Select upgrade for about 2 years it shows you can live without upgrading continually if necessary. |

Kinetic: What does "double boot" mean to you and why is it a problem. For me the problem is the extra time taken to softload so that's just to speed it up. |

double boot in the context written in the article above - Which is refering to the boot in to RISC OS 4, and then the boot into Select, which is... time... consuming. |

It's not the so-called double boot that's time consuming, it's the detecting and mounting the hard disc (twice). If people are that bothered about double-boot then they should get the ROMs but I reckon it will be cheaper to make a flash rom podule (and more fun! :) |
