Napster Under Renewed Legal Pressure

Posted by Alasdair Bailey on 22:53, 14/6/2000 | , ,

Napster, the online MP3 music trading network is under renewed legal pressure to shut down. The Recording Industry of America has applied for an injunction to shut down the site which distributes the Napster software.

Napster is unique in that its software enables users to trade MP3s between each other, directly from one home PC to another. That way, there's no central server and Napster themselves can't be prosecuted for breach of copyright. However, that's not to say that the record industry and a few notable artists won't try their hardest to have the site shut down on the grounds that it facilitates copyright infringment.

This news comes only weeks after a Napster client program for RISC OS was released in the form of RiscSter.
